We’ve all been at a networking event or meeting where we have been asked that question, “What do you do?”  It’s often one that many do not know how to answer or end up mumbling something that they later regret because it didn’t really sound right.

How to avoid this? I believe that the key is to understand what your value statement is. What is the core message that you want to convey to others?

Your core message is that which tells others who you are, why you do what you do and how you do it. And, here’s the part so often missed, what the benefits could be for them to know this information.

But how to know what your core message is? Begin with creating the value statements that ground your business services and objectives. Your value statements are what you represent and what you believe in. They are what you hope to achieve and, especially important, they are what form the basis of how you help people.

Value statements position your business so it’s easily understood by others. For this reason the language that you use to create your value statements and then your core message is crucial. It must be very precise, compelling and lead others to believe that there is a world of possibility for them in working with your company.

Here’s the thing then:

The values that are the basis of your business will serve to create a business that is sought out by others – but only if you, too, as it’s leader, step confidently into these values and totally own the message that they convey. To do so will create a level of confidence and authority that can’t help but attract your ideal clients and create the type of long-term business relationships that any successful business requires to thrive.
